टेहरी गढ़वाल का संक्षिप्त इतिहास

टिहरी और गढ़वाल दो अलग नामों को मिलाकर इस जिले का नाम रखा गया है। जहाँ टिहरी बना है शब्द ‘त्रिहरी’ से, जिसका मतलब है एक ऐसा स्थान जो तीन तरह के पाप (जो जन्मते है मनसा, वचना, कर्मा से) धो देता है वहीं दूसरा शब्द बना है ‘गढ़’ से, जिसका मतलब होता है किला। सन् 888 से पूर्व सारा गढ़वाल क्षेत्र छोटे छोटे ‘गढ़ों’ में विभाजित था, जिनमें अलग-अलग राजा राज्य करते थे जिन्हें ‘राणा’, ‘राय’ या ‘ठाकुर’ के नाम से जाना जाता था।
ऐसा कहा जाता है कि मालवा के राजकुमार कनकपाल एक बार बद्रीनाथ जी (जो आजकल चमोली जिले में है) के दर्शन को गये जहाँ वो पराक्रमी राजा भानु प्रताप से मिले। राजा भानु प्रताप उनसे काफी प्रभावित हुए और अपनी इकलौती बेटी का विवाह कनकपाल से करवा दिया साथ ही अपना राज्य भी उन्हें दे दिया। धीरे-धीरे कनकपाल और उनकी आने वाली पीढ़ियाँ एक-एक कर सारे गढ़ जीत कर अपना राज्य बड़ाती गयीं। इस तरह से सन् 1803 तक सारा (918 सालों में) गढ़वाल क्षेत्र इनके कब्जे में आ गया।
उन्ही सालों में गोरखाओं के नाकाम हमले (लंगूर गढ़ी को कब्जे में करने की कोशिश) भी होते रहे, लेकिन सन् 1803 में आखिर देहरादून की एक लड़ाई में गोरखाओं की विजय हुई जिसमें राजा प्रद्वमुन शाह मारे गये। लेकिन उनके शाहजादे (सुदर्शन शाह) जो उस वक्त छोटे थे वफादारों के हाथों बचा लिये गये। धीरे-धीरे गोरखाओं का प्रभुत्व बढ़ता गया और इन्होनें करीब 12 साल राज्य किया। इनका राज्य कांगड़ा तक फैला हुआ था, फिर गोरखाओं को महाराजा रणजीत सिंह ने कांगड़ा से निकाल बाहर किया। और इधर सुदर्शन शाह ने इस्ट इंडिया कम्पनी की मदद से गोरखाओं से अपना राज्य पुनः छीन लिया।
ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी ने फिर कुमाऊँ, देहरादून और पूर्व (ईस्ट) गढ़वाल को ब्रिटिश साम्राज्य में मिला दिया और पश्चिम गढ़वाल राजा सुदर्शन शाह को दे दिया जिसे तब टेहरी रियासत के नाम से जाना गया।
राजा सुदर्शन शाह ने अपनी राजधानी टिहरी या टेहरी शहर को बनाया, बाद में उनके उत्तराधिकारी प्रताप शाह, कीर्ति शाह और नरेन्द्र शाह ने इस राज्य की राजधानी क्रमशः प्रताप नगर, कीर्ति नगर और नरेन्द्र नगर स्थापित की। इन तीनों ने 1815 से सन् 1949 तक राज्य किया। तब भारत छोड़ो आंदोलन के दौरान यहाँ के लोगों ने भी काफी बढ चढ कर हिस्सा लिया। आजादी के बाद, लोगों के मन में भी राजाओं के शासन से मुक्त होने की इच्छा बलवती होने लगी। महाराजा के लिये भी अब राज करना मुश्किल होने लगा था। और फिर अंत में 60 वें राजा मानवेन्द्र शाह ने भारत के साथ एक हो जाना कबूल कर लिया। इस तरह सन् 1949 में टिहरी राज्य को उत्तर प्रदेश में मिलाकर इसी नाम का एक जिला बना दिया गया। बाद में 24 फरवी 1960 में उत्तर प्रदेश सरकार ने इसकी एक तहसील को अलग कर उत्तरकाशी नाम का एक ओर जिला बना दिया।
