A group of authors have revisited the history and wrote about the ideology and beliefs of Mahatma Gandhi in their book and called it Gandhi Reconsidered. I was reading that article or news in IBN Live in which they mentioned some questions raised by some people mostly historian. Here I am posting my views for the same questions asked in above mentioned article.
Page 30 of the book suggests Gandhi’s agitation against the British in South Africa was primarily for the Indians living there and didn’t include the native Africans.
He was there for Indians so definetly he was supposed to fight for them, it doesn’t make sense to include native Africans to fight for Indians because his main concern was the discrimination against Indians. Britishers threw Gandhi (an indian) out of train not the native africans. How will it look if some comes to america to support Indians and then starts aupporting red indians instead.
On page 33, the authors say 18 out of Gandhi’s favourite 20 authors were European, suggesting that he was deeply influenced by Western thoughts.
18 out of 20 actress I like either american or european, 8 out of 10 tv serials I like are american, most of the movies I like produced and made in america, most of the books I read or liked written by non-Indian still I am not influenced by western thoughts, even though I learned lot from them. What’s wrong to learn something good from different cultures.
The authors say that for a long time, Gandhi hesitated to say that men and women are equal.
9 out of 10 Indian men never say I love you to their wife or children does that mean they really don’t love or don’t care for them.
The authors have claimed that Gandhi was worried by the rising influence of the Socialists and Communists in the Kisan Sabhas.
what’s wrong in this? how many countries in the world have communists ruler? they are no good.
Page 88 calls Gandhi a Hindu leader. The historians say he could not differentiate between nationalism and communalism.
Do you think a muslim will ever be called a Hindu leader, Hindus are in minority in pakistan can we call mushraf a hindu leader? A hindu will be always called a hindu leader same way a christian will be christian leader in america. Gandhi was never against of any community, infact at the end he died (or should I say killed) by a hindu only.
They claim that Gandhi’s concept of India included Muslims, but he didn’t see them as a prominent section.
Even in todays’ world America includes lots of minorities but dont’ want to see them in promiment political leadership. It’s not fair to say this for a person who even didn’t survive to see “savindhan” of an independent nation and a republic india.
The ones backing the book say it doesn’t call him racist, but insist Gandhi wasn’t concerned about native Africans who were also being oppressed by the British rulers.
Most of the world were oppressed by British rulers that time definetly every perosn will first care about their own people. Lots of people dying in other parts of the world, they don’t have food to survive? Does authors of this book care about them before caring about their family members.
Common give me a break and rest the history in peace.

1I like reading your thoughts. The writers you have mentioned project Gandhi in a very moderate way. Read some Dalit Leaders or Sanghi. What stop nothing short of abusing him.

2tht was a nice reflection of ur thoughts…
yeah.. there r lots of ppl who argue tht what Gandhiji preached wasn’t gud.. but, its all their individual perspectives.. according to me… he is the Father of our nation (no doubt in it!!) and one who laid the foundation for the independent India to exist..

3Nice post once again.
Quite a thought provoking one.
As they say, there are always two sides of a coin - some people would always want to see(believe) in the other side.

4Nice post. A small remark.
Indeed Gandhi was clearly influenced by the European culture when he was studying law in England. He also believed that the British empire is for the good of India. Only after seeing the pathetic condition of Indian indentured labours in S.A. did he started opposing the British, I interpret as per the first part of his ‘experiments with truth’ book.
